In order to promote the scientific research of Xuzhou Museum, this five-year plan for scientific research of Xuzhou Museum is hereby formulated, in accordance with Opinions on Several Policies to Support Development of Modern Industries, and Regulations of Xuzhou Museum on Donations (Trial) issued by the municipal party committee and the municipal government.
I. Guidelines
We aim to establish a national first-class museum, adhere to the development guideline of "develop the museum with academic thoughts and activities", strengthen the organization and leadership of scientific research, create sound researching environment and academic atmosphere, and improve the overall power of scientific research of Xuzhou Museum, so as to promote the steady and orderly scientific research of Xuzhou Museum in the next five years.
III. Responsibilities
(I) Found Huaihai Museology
Huaihai Museology, founded in 2018, is a serial academic journal, and a comprehensive academic journal in museology released domestically in public. Based on the guideline of historical materialism, the journal aims to publicize the party and nation's regulations and policies related to cultural relics, timely reflect new discoveries and results of Xuzhou's museology, reflect new findings of archaeology and museum work of important cultural relics in Huaihai Economic Zone, enhance exchanges with colleagues in the circles, improve the level of scientific research of Xuzhou's museology, and promote the prosperity of museology industry. The contributions solicited cover areas including cultural relics research, museum science research, archaeology research, cultural heritage research, history and local chronicles research, etc.
(II) Edit and publish academic monographs, catalogues of cultural relics, reports of archaeological excavation, reports of preservation and restoration of cultural relics, exhibition catalogues, and reading materials of scientific periodicals
1. Publish series of academic monographs. An academic monograph refers to the work with a high academic level and certain creativity, in which the author makes in-depth research on a specific issue. Professionals in this museum are encouraged to write professional academic monographs on special topics including Xuzhou's cultural relics, archaeology, cultural relics preservation, culture of the Han Dynasty and museum operation. Under the guideline of the academic committee, five academic monographs including Series of Academic Works by Scholars of Xuzhou Museum are published as planned and with sponsorship.
2. Compile and publish series of reports on archaeological excavation. In order to resolve issues on the archaeological excavation materials which haven't been released for a long time, improve the level of archaeological research of Xuzhou, and definite the person in charge and chronological process, we organize the compilation of series of reports on archaeological excavation, and encourage personnel with abilities and potentials to conduct special and comprehensive archaeological researches. Ten series of reports on archaeological excavation in big and middle sizes have been compiled and published, including Han Tombs on Nie Mound, Xinyi; Liu He's Tomb on Huoshan Mountain, Xuzhou; Excavation Report of Han Tombs on Houlou Mountain; Excavation Report of King of Chu Tomb on Woniu Mountain; Excavation Report of King of Chu Tomb on Tuolan Mountain; Excavation Report of Han Tombs on Lali Mountain; Report of Archaeological Excavation of Han Tombs on Tiecha Mountain; Excavation Report of Han Tombs on Tushan Mountain; Jiawang Temple; and Funerary Pits of Han Tombs on Yanggui Mountain.
3. Compile and publish series of reports on preservation and restoration of cultural relics. In order to exchange technological achievements of preservation and restoration of cultural relics, improve the theoretical level and technical skills of professionals on cultural relics restoration in this museum, and organize scientific and technological researches on preservation and restoration of cultural relics, four series of reports on preservation and restoration of cultural relics are to be published, including Report of Restoration on Jade Coffin Unearthed from King of Jiangdu Tomb M2 on Dayun Mountain, Xuyi; Report on Preservation and Restoration of Colored Terra-Cotta Figures Unearthed from King of Chu Tomb in North Dongshan; Research on Craftsmanship of Copper Mirrors Unearthed from Xuzhou; and Report on Restoration of Jade Suits Unearthed from Xuzhou.
4. Compile and publish series of cultural relics catalogues. Xuzhou Museum boasts abundant collections of cultural relics and a complete collection system. In order to improve the utility and research level of collections, and promote the social functions of the museum, we plan to enhance the research on featured cultural relics in our museum collection, and publish General System of Cultural Relics Collections in Xuzhou Museum, and form a series of research findings. The publication incudes six rolls: copper mirrors, terra-cotta figures, imperial seals, porcelains, calligraphy and paintings, and jade wares.
5. Compile series of exhibition catalogues. Exhibition is the main measure of giving the audience publication and education, and an important symbol of the quality and level of museum work. It reflects the value of the museum's cultural relics collections to some extent, and represents the level of the museum's results in scientific research. On basis of organizing exhibitions, we plan to compile and publish 5 exhibition catalogues: Exhibition of Colored Terra-Cotta Figures (Restored) Unearthed from King of Chu Tomb in North Dongshan, Xuzhou; Joint Exhibition of Excellent Cultural Relics in Yellow River Valley; Exhibition of Imperial Seals Unearthed from Xuzhou; Exhibition of Cultural Relics of the Liu Family, the Royal Family in the Han Dynasty; and Retrospective Exhibition of Contemporary Paintings and Sculptures in Xuzhou.
6. Compile and publish series of reading materials of popular science. In order to improve the museum's social education theoretical system, realize specificity, diversity, humanization and sustainable development, include the writing of reading materials of popular science in scientific research, promote the transformation from traditional scientific research achievements to universal education of mass language, and meet the growing cultural needs of the public, we plan to publish 8 reading materials of public science: By Intellectuals - Selected Educational Courses of Xuzhou Museum, Xuzhou in Archaeology, Trace of Gupeng - Stories Behind Archaeology, Stories of Mirrors in Ancient Times, Mythological World on Lacquerwares; Charming Costumes and Pottery Figures in Han Dynasty, Young Calligraphers, and What Is Archaeology.
(III) Hold seminars home and abroad, compile and publish research proceedings
We enhance cooperation with relative research institutes; conduct scientific researches on jade ware, copper ware, iron ware, porcelain, etc.; plan to hold six seminars: International Seminar on Jade Ware of the Han Dynasty, Seminar on Copper Mirrors of Han and Tang Dynasties, Seminar on Terra-Cotta Figures of Qin and Han Dynasties, Seminar on Imperial Seals of the Han Dynasty, and Seminar on Porcelain Kilns in North China; and compile and publish research proceedings.
(IV) Organize research projects
Under the guidance of the academic committee, we organize relative research projects, and recommend and declare scientific research projects at national, provincial and municipal levels, on preservation and management of cultural relics, archaeological excavation and research, museum organization and management, local history and culture in Xuzhou, etc. Under the guidance of academic committee, we promote project funding system, establish declaration, approval and research systems on scientific research projects for Xuzhou Museum.
(V) Organize the writing of professional papers
We encourage professionals to write research papers based on the cultural relics, archaeology and exhibition resources of this museum. We organize the museum staff to write research papers on professional work according to their actual work, recommend them to join annual seminars of professional committees such as Chinese Museums Association and Jiangsu Museum Society, and organize the participation in calls for papers with themes like Museum Day and Cultural Heritage Day, and annual provincial selection activities for excellent papers on museology.
III. Safeguard measures
(I) To found the academic committee, establish and improve a series of management systems of scientific research, enhance scientific research management, so as to provide organizational and institutional guarantee for the formulation and implementation of scientific research plan.
(II) To hire some academic advisers, and organize excellent specialists and academic leaders in museology and relative circles to participate in the scientific research of this museum, so as to provide talents for academic achievements.
(III) To formulate Regulations on Scientific Research Management of Xuzhou Museum (Trial), Regulations for Academic Committee of Xuzhou Museum (Trial) and other relative documents, so as to ensure the above scientific researches are carried out in order according to regulations.
(IV) To conduct annual budget for research funds and put the research investment in place, so as to give finance guarantee to scientific research.
(V) To prepare scientific laboratories and equip scientific research with relative facilities, so as to give technology guarantee to the implementation of scientific research plans.
(VI) To formulate and fulfill Incentives for Scientific Research in Xuzhou Museum (Trial), and establish incentive mechanisms, in order to motivate the staff to conduct scientific research, continuously improve the overall level of academic research in Xuzhou Museum, and promote the cultivation of professionals.
