Xuzhou was known as Pengcheng in the ancient times. It has a history of more than 6,000 years of civilization and a history of more than 2,600 years. Xuzhou is the hometown of Liu Bang of Han, and an important fiefdom of Chu Kingdom of the Western Han Dynasty and Pengcheng Kingdom of the Eastern Han Dynasty. The 400 years of the Han Dynasty left Xuzhou with a very rich Han cultural relics. Over the years, Xuzhou Han tomb archeology has achieved fruitful results. According to statistics, nearly 3,000 tombs of the Han dynasty have been excavated. A total of 21 places were found, which became the core support of "Xuzhou Culture in Han Dynasty".
Li Xiaojun, the director of Xuzhou Museum, said in his speech that archeology is the basic work to promote the high-quality development of cultural relics, and it is an important starting point to explore regional civilization, inherit history and culture, and cultivate urban character. The archeological work of Xuzhou takes the reform and opening up as a watershed, which can be roughly divided into two stages. The former stage is mainly based on the work of the Archaeological Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Shandong Provincial Cultural Relics Management Committee, the Jiangsu Provincial Cultural Relics Management Committee, and the Jiangsu Provincial Cultural Relics Task Force. The latter stage of work is mainly hosted by the Nanjing Museum and the Xuzhou Museum. Especially since the 21st century, the archaeological work in Xuzhou has been fully on track and presents three characteristics: first, the regional civilization in Xuzhou is more clear, and neolithic archaeology, the Han and the Ming archeology have achieved remarkable results. The second is that the Xuzhou Cultural Expo team has continued to grow and develop, and the professional team has been continuously improved. The Xuzhou Museum has obtained the qualifications of an archaeological excavation team leader and has established a special cultural protection technology center. A number of cultural relics protection institutions and site museums, such as the Han Culture Scenic Spot, Guishan Han Tomb, Maocun Han Tomb, Baiji Han Tomb, and Xuzhou Han Portrait Stone Art Museum, have been successively established on the basis of archeological work.
