Activity location:Lecture Hall of Xuzhou Museum

      Age requirement:7-12 years old

            Introduction:

In ancient times, the drum, revered as a heavenly artifact, was mainly used for sacrifice. It was widely used in hunting campaigns and was taken as an instrument since the Zhou Dynasty. There are eight instruments in the Zhou Dynasty, among which the drum leads the others. In ancient documents, a drum will be a lead-in before the harp was played.

People have gradually advanced from barbarism to civilization accompanied by broad and profound drum culture. Drums can be regarded as a musical instrument for celebration in the folk, or used in the temple sacrifice and the imperial palace feast. From primitive pottery drums, clay drums, leather drums, copper drums, to a wide variety of modern drums, drums are one of the most popular and widely used musical instruments.

Xuzhou City was called Pengcheng (彭城) in ancient times, and the Chinese character “彭” originally means the sound of drum beating. Moreover, “彭” has been taken as a name of ancient state, place or first name for a long time. How about such connection between them?

On the morning of January 21, let's learn about the history of Chinese drum, enjoying the charm of drum music and welcoming the arrival of the Chinese New Year together!
