The Intangible Cultural Art Class in Xuzhou Museum: “Xuzhou Tiger-head Shoes”

       “Intangible Cultural Art Class in Xuzhou Museum”is a serial art class which is organized by Xuzhou Museum and Xuzhou Dama Arts, with the theme of Intangible Culture. In every session, we introduce an intangible cultural heritage of Xuzhou and teach children to imitating or making.

       The theme of intangible art class is “Xuzhou Tiger-head Shoes” in June. Xuzhou Tiger-head Shoes are a kind of traditional children’s shoes. Due to the head of shoe is like a tiger’s head, we called them tiger-head shoes. They are not only pretty, but also very practical. In addition, they can protect against evil spirits as a kind of mascot. Tiger-head Shoes are made complicatedly. Only for the head part, it has the several needle techniques: cixiu, bahua and dazi. Red and yellow are the main colors of the surface of the shoes. The mouth, eyebrow, nose and eyes are depicted by some thick lines to show a wild face of the tiger. There is a tradition in Xuzhou. If there is a baby in a family, grandma of grandpa should give the baby 3 tiger-head shoes. Specifically, first pair should be blue and means preventing evil; the second pair should be red and means avoiding disaster; the third pair should be purple and means growing up.
