More than eighty clay seals were found in the inner tomb passage, the first and second western chamber at Shizishan. Inscriotions on the seals’ luters can be classifird into 3 major categeries: Chu court officials, Chu army officials and Chu country officials. These clay seals accompanied burial items included in the tomb. The inscription on the clay seals identify the origens of these burial goods as being presented for the Chu king’s funeral by members of the imperial court, army or country government.
The inscriptin on the seal on the bottom, Chu zhongwei, identifies the lieutenant of Chu, the highest-ranking military officer charged with equipping the Chu army. The seal on the top belongs to Chu neishi, which identifies the Interior Minister, the highest-rankiong Chu civil official charged with adminstering the peoples of the Chu kingdom.
