This gilt bronze basin was excavated from the M2 tomb at Dongdongshan and belonged to the Queen of Chu. The basin is shallow with a sloped base, a thin body and little decoration. 4 characters, Zhao ji mu pan(conbubine Zhao’s basin), are incised on the side of the basin. The Shouwen jiezi dicitionary (complied in the Eastern Han AD 25-220) included terms for the cleaning of different parts of the body, for example mu for washing hair and yu for washing the body. It is possible that the basin belonged to Queen Zhao prioe to her elevation to the rank of queen.
