Yan Ermei (1603-1662), whose courtesy name was Diaoding or Yongqing, and pseudonym was Gugu or Bai Da Shan Ren, was native of Pei County, Jiangsu. He was an adherent of the Ming Dynasty. His poems and calligraphy were well-known at that time. This scroll calligraphy represents a combination of brush-side and brush-center techniques, and picturesque disorder. It is a rare authentic calligraphy work of Yan.
