Hua Yan (1682-1756), whose courtesy name was Desong or Qiuyue, and pseudonym was Xin Luo Shan Ren, or Bai Sha Dao Ren, or Li Gou Ju Shi, or Dong Yuan Bu Yi Sheng, was native of Shanghang, Fujian. He was adept at bird-and-flower paintings, figure paintings and landscape paintings. In this painting, two cranes are standing under the blue sky and green pines, with elaborate style and freehand brushwork.
